Dr. Byron Cotton, M.D.
Dr. Byron C. Cotton has provided medical care for children and families in Alabama and Georgia for over 30 years. He is a native of Headland, Alabama. Dr. Cotton obtained a bachelors of science from Bethune-Cookman in 1978 and earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1985. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan and received a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine from the University of Alabama; during which time he was awarded the CMFDP Postdoctoral Fellowship Award.
Dr. Cotton is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. He founded Kids & Teens Primary Healthcare in 2006 where he currently practices. He teaches residents from Atlanta Medical Center and Medical Students from Emory University. He is a member of professional organizations to include the American Academy of Pediatrics and Society of Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Cotton has continued to dedicate himself to his patients and the community; to his merit he was recently recognized as one of “Atlanta’s Top Doctors” in Atlanta Magazine every year from 2009 thru 2014. He has held clinical appointments with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Egleston Health Care System. His area of expertise is pediatrics and adolescent medicine; nonetheless he has a long time professional interest in asthma and obesity.
In his spare time, Dr. Cotton enjoys cycling, hiking, and rock climbing among other activities. Dr. Cotton stresses the importance of the role of lifestyle, such as diet and physical activity, to his patients and caregivers. He strives to build community relationships to ensure access to quality pediatric medical care for local residents.
Karen Melde, CPNP
Karen is a native of Staten Island, NY. She has lived in GA for 32 years.
She is a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, as well as being a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Nursing Honor Society.
She earned her Master’s degree in Nursing at Emory University. Prior to becoming a CPNP, she worked in the newborn and NICU nurseries for many years.
She has worked for 24 years as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Since becoming a CPNP, she has worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on the Pediatric Liver Transplant team for 7 years, as well as the General Surgery service for 4 years.
While employed by Emory, she was one of 4 nurses chosen to represent Emory on an International Nursing Research program, where she spent 2 weeks in Edinburgh, Scotland collecting information on her research project.
She has lectured at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
She returned to primary care in 2013. Her interests include caring for children with ADHD, asthma and childhood obesity. She also provides lactation support.
In her free time, Karen enjoys reading and spending time with her husband and 2 grown children.
